Discussion of J.R.R Tolkien’s Secondary World of Arda, including Middle-Earth, strictly on the basis of the Greater Canon of books published by JRRT and his son Christopher as his literary executor. The Greater Canon comprises the Hobbit, the Lord of the Rings, the published Silmarillion, the Unfinished Tales, and the three Great Tales of the Children of Hurin, Beren and Luthien, and the Fall of Gondolin. Comments on books such as Robert Foster’s Complete Guide to Middle-Earth and Brian Sibley’s Fall of Numenor, which attempt to faithfully collect and re-present the Greater Canon are also on topic. The extent to which film and TV adaptations are faithful to or deviate from the Greater Canon may be discussed but this is not the place to talk about them in general. The literary archaeology of the History of Middle Earth and other Primary World subjects are generally off topic, including the lives of JRRT and CJRT.
