About

This site is a small collection of essays and short articles about J.R.R. Tolkien and his imagined world.

I sometimes refer to the Greater Tolkien Canon, by which I mean the books published by JRRT and his son Christopher as his literary executor. The Greater Canon comprises the Hobbit, the Lord of the Rings, the published Silmarillion, the Unfinished Tales, and the three Great Tales of the Children of Hurin, Beren and Luthien, and the Fall of Gondolin. The literary archaeology of the History of Middle Earth volumes is deliberately excluded so a broadly consistent canon can be established.

The full name of the site, Parma Rumillion, is a light-hearted and inferred Secondary World name. “Parma” is the Quenya word for book and by extension writings. Rumil was the greatest Elvish historian and lived in Tirion in Aman. I imagine him founding a school of historians called the Rumilli (“the Rumils”) and so “Parma Rumillion” is the “writings of the Rumilli” and so their body of work.
